Biography

Italian singer, guitarist, arranger, and composer Giuliano Ligabue is an exceptional performer of the Great American Songbook, known for his Crooner-style vocals often compared to those of Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra. 

Born in Lodi, he has been living in Piacenza since the age of 8 and began playing music at the age of 7. His father, a professional musician and singer, passed on his love for music to Giuliano from a young age. Growing up in a family of musicians, Giuliano was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, including Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, and Bossa Nova, which inspired his own musical style. 

In 2001, Giuliano began studying jazz guitar, specializing mainly in the swing style. He was a finalist in the national contest for young jazz talents organized by Piacenza Jazzclub in 2006. In 2008, he began performing as a singer and guitarist, playing classic songs by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, and many others, drawing upon the teachings of his father. 

At the same time, he was inspired by great seven-string guitarists such as George Van Eps, Bucky Pizzarelli, and John Pizzarelli. Meeting Bucky Pizzarelli (who played with Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, and many others) and his son John Pizzarelli was a turning point for Giuliano, giving him new motivation to master the seven-string guitar, which he often uses in his performances.

In 2012, he founded his own trio, the Giuliano Ligabue Trio, with Michele Mazzoni on bass and Mario Zara on piano. Giuliano arranged and performed classic American Songbook repertoire at various luxury events, jazz clubs, and festivals. In 2013, he released the album "Swing Affair" with his drumless trio, which received positive feedback both in Italy and abroad. Following the album's release, Giuliano began collaborating with notable Italian and international musicians, including Paolo Tomelleri (an esteemed clarinetist and saxophonist who played with Tony Scott, Clark Terry, Joe Venuti, Enzo Jannacci, and Giorgio Gaber, to name a few), Mattia Cigalini, Gianni Azzali, Michele Franzini, Walter Ganda, Simon Woolf, Richard Pite, and Frank Griffith.

In 2014, Giuliano participated in the "Made In New York Jazz Competition," and shortly after, he began an important collaboration with renowned American pianist John Colianni (known for his work with Mel Tormé, Lionel Hampton, Les Paul, and Woody Allen). In August 2016, Giuliano and the John Colianni Trio toured the United Kingdom, performing successfully at renowned jazz clubs, mainly in London.

After intensive studying under the guidance of M° Giuseppe Parmigiani, where he expanded his knowledge in arranging for large ensembles, Giuliano presented his new project, Giuliano Ligabue & Swing Band, at the Summertime in Jazz Festival, organized by the Piacenza Jazz Club in the summer of 2016. The wind section is composed of four musicians: Gianni Satta (trumpet), Cristiano Boschesi (trombone), Alessandro Bertozzi (alto sax), and Andrea Zermani (tenor sax), and the rhythm section consisted of Stefano Caniato (piano), Michele Mazzoni (bass), Marco Orsi (drums), and, of course, Giuliano Ligabue (vocals, guitar, and arrangements). They recreated the intimate musical atmosphere of the Big Bands.

The premiere of this concert, recorded live, became the second CD of Giuliano Ligabue, "Live at Summertime in Jazz," which was released in December 2016.

On July 26th, 2019, he released his third CD, "Ci può stare." This new recording represents an important turning point as it features six new original songs in Italian language composed by Giuliano with lyrics written by Massimo Boeri. "Ci può stare" is also characterized by a great variety of musical styles ranging from Swing, Latin rhythms, to R&B. In addition to the original songs, the album includes international hits by Frank Sinatra, Sting, Queen, Nina Simone, and Elvis Presley. The sound ranges from the big Orchestra (big band with string section) to the intimate atmosphere of 7-string guitar and voice, all expertly arranged in an original and effective way by Ligabue himself. The album features some of the most renowned session musicians in the Italian music scene, including Davide Ghidoni (trumpet), Serafino Tedesi (strings), and Alessandro Bertozzi (saxophones), among others.

In 2020, Giuliano recorded the EP "This Happy Rhythm," which features his original song of the same name. The EP also includes a collaboration with saxophonist Mattia Cigalini, who appears as a special guest on the track. Additionally, Giuliano released a Christmas single in the same year called "Winter Wonderland," for which he wrote the big band arrangement and produced the song in its entirety.

In 2021, Giuliano released several singles that were well-received by fans and garnered an average of 32,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. These releases served as a teaser for his highly anticipated new album, "Timeless," which was released on September 16, 2022. On this new album, Giuliano pays tribute to some of the greatest names in international music, including Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Spandau Ballet, and Stevie Wonder, among others, by creating unique jazz interpretations of their biggest hits. The album, which was entirely arranged and produced by Giuliano himself, has already achieved over 1 million plays on Spotify within just a few months of its release.

Giuliano Ligabue is an accomplished musician with extensive professional experience in a wide range of contexts. He has performed at numerous luxury events (corporate, weddings, and gala events). He has also appeared at jazz festivals, concerts in theaters and squares, and in prestigious clubs in Italy and England.

For many years, Giuliano has combined his live and recording activities with teaching, sharing his expertise as a guitar and singing teacher at various private schools. In addition to his teaching work, he has also collaborated on the creation of soundtracks, commercials, and musicals for productions across the globe, including in the United States, Israel, China, Korea, Denmark, and Germany.

Nel 2001 inizia lo studio della chitarra jazz approfondendo vari stili e specializzandosi soprattutto nello Swing.

Nel 2006 è finalista nel concorso nazionale per giovani talenti del jazz italiano "Chicco Bettinardi" organizzato dal Piacenza Jazzclub.

Nel 2008, facendo tesoro degli insegnamenti paterni, inizia a proporsi come cantante e chitarrista interpretando classici di Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett e Dean Martin. 

Sempre nello stesso periodo, ispirato da chitarristi come George Van Eps, Howard Alden, Bucky e John Pizzarelli, si avvicina alla chitarra a 7 corde. Proprio i fortunati incontri con il leggendario Bucky Pizzarelli (chitarrista di Benny Goodman e Frank Sinatra) e con il figlio John Pizzarelli conferiscono a Giuliano nuovi stimoli sull'approfondimento di questo strumento. Oggi è tra i pochissimi musicisti nel nostro Paese ad utilizzare una semi-acustica a 7 corde in ambito Jazz.

Nel 2012 fonda il Giuliano Ligabue Trio con Mario Zara al piano e Michele Mazzoni al basso dove riarrangia ed interpreta il suo repertorio di classici del Songbook Americano esibendosi in svariati locali, eventi privati, jazzclub e festival. Nel 2013 sempre con il suo trio, registra l’album dal titolo “Swing Affair” che riscuote ottimi consensi sia in Italia che all’estero, a seguito del quale nascono importanti collaborazioni con musicisti italiani e stranieri.

Tra i musicisti con cui Giuliano ha avuto modo di suonare si possono citare Paolo Tomelleri (clarinettista e sassofonista che ha collaborato tra gli altri con Tony Scott, Clark Terry, Joe Venuti, Enzo Jannacci e Giorgio Gaber), Mattia Cigalini, Gianni Azzali, Michele Franzini, Walter Ganda, Simon Woolf, Richard Pite e Frank Griffith.

Nel 2014 partecipa al concorso “Made In New York Jazz Competition”, in seguito nasce un’importante collaborazione con il pianista americano John Colianni (pianista di Mel Tormè, Lionel Hampton, Les Paul e Woody Allen), proseguita nel 2015 in Italia, per poi assumere carattere internazionale nell'agosto del 2016 con un Tour insieme al Trio di Colianni in Inghilterra svoltosi prevalentemente a Londra in rinomati Club, The Boisdale Of Canary Wharf, The Boisdale of Belgravia, The Concorde Club, Spike's Place Jazz Club che hanno ospitato nomi del calibro di Tom Jones, Rod Steward ed Amy Winehouse.

Dopo un periodo di intenso studio in cui approfondisce le proprie conoscenze nell’arrangiamento per grandi formazioni sotto la guida del M° Giuseppe Parmigiani, nell'estate 2016 presenta nel cartellone ufficiale del Summertime in Jazz, organizzato dal Piacenza Jazz Club, un nuovo progetto musicale, Giuliano Ligabue & Swing Band  dove aggiunge una sezione di ben quattro fiati composta da Gianni Satta (tromba), Cristiano Boschesi (trombone), Alessandro Bertozzi (sax contralto) e Andrea Zermani (sax tenore), ad una solida sezione ritmica costituita da Stefano Caniato (pianoforte), Michele Mazzoni (basso) e Marco “Nano” Orsi (batteria), oltre naturalmente alla sua chitarra e alla sua voce. Dalla registrazione di questa serata, in Prima assoluta, nel dicembre 2016 esce il CD intitolato "Live at Summertime in Jazz".

Il 26 luglio 2019 viene pubblicato il suo terzo CD dal titolo "Ci può stare"(Edizioni Musicali Bagutti / Fonola). Questo nuovo lavoro discografico rappresenta un'importante svolta, nell'album sono infatti presenti sei brani inediti cantati in italiano composti da Giuliano Ligabue con testi scritti da Massimo Boeri. "Ci può stare" è inoltre caratterizzato da una grande varietà di stili musicali che spaziano tra swing, ritmi latini e R&B. Oltre ai brani inediti sono inclusi nell'album numerosi successi internazionali di Frank Sinatra, Sting, Queen, Nina Simone ed Elvis Presley. Le sonorità vanno dalla grande Orchestra (big band con sezione archi) all'intimismo di voce e chitarra a 7 corde. Il tutto arrangiato sapientemente in modo originale ed efficace da Giuliano stesso. Alla registrazione dell'album hanno partecipato alcuni dei più apprezzati musicisti nel panorama musicale italiano come Davide Ghidoni (tromba), Serafino Tedesi (archi) e Alessandro Bertozzi (sax) per citarne alcuni. 

Il 20 ottobre 2020 esce l’EP “This Happy Rhythm” (Level49) che vede la partecipazione del sassofonista Mattia Cigalini come ospite nel brano scritto da Giuliano che dà anche il titolo al CD. A Natale dello stesso anno viene pubblicato il singolo “Winter Wonderland” (Skylab99 Records) che Giuliano ha personalmente arrangiato per big band.

Nel 2021 pubblica numerosi singoli che ottengono ottimi consensi dal pubblico raggiungendo una media di 32000 acoltatori mensili su Spotify. Queste pubblicazioni anticipano l’uscita del suo nuovo album “Timeless” (Skylab99 Records) uscito il 16 settembre 2022. In questo nuovo CD il crooner e chitarrista rende omaggio a grandi nomi della musica internazionale come Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Spandau Ballet, Stevie Wonder e molti altri, realizzando rivisitazioni in chiave Jazz dei loro più grandi successi. L’album, interamente arrangiato e prodotto da Giuliano stesso, in pochi mesi realizza oltre 1 milione di ascolti su Spotify.

Giuliano Ligabue può vantare una lunga esperienza professionale in svariati contesti: Luxury Events (Corporate, Weddings, Gala), Jazz Festival, concerti in Teatri, Piazze, prestigiosi Club in Italia e Inghilterra.

Affianca ormai da molti anni all’attività live e discografica, quella didattica come docente di chitarra e canto presso numerose scuole private. Inoltre, collabora alla realizzazione di colonne sonore, spot pubblicitari e musical per varie produzioni negli Stati Uniti, Israele, Cina, Corea, Danimarca e Germania.
